Just before the winter holidays we can notice real cold weather and a lot of snow. This has caused some new experiences for our three African and two Asian students. Outside the class room they can admire their own “sculpture park”. For almost two weeks these snowmen have welcomed Haugetun visitors.

Some days after the creation of snowmen the Norwegian class as the rest of the students were going to Oslo to sledge in Korketrekker’n (The Cork Screw). The distance is 1400 metres long and during the trip you can experience high speed, some visits in the snow outside the lane and a lot of fun. Sledging is far from a well known activity in Bangladesh, Cameron, Liberia, Sudan and Vietnam but nothing new for people from Kazakhstan and Alaska.
The Norwegian Class’ Saturday consisted of a pasta meal produced by Andrew from Alaska, “Do you know our countries?” – a prize winning quiz based on information posters; African dances and lectures about Kazakhstan and Bangladesh.
One day the class was visiting Nylende primary school. That became a very successful trip. All the pupils from 6 – 13 years old got a lesson in African dancing. They were also told about the home countries of some of our students and they could get some impressions of a school in Norway.
So far the class also has seen some new Norwegian movies and some older material informing them about traditional folk tales. While the students taste Norwegian culture they also like to try food from the home lands of the class. The Vietnamese lunch made by the leadership of Tuong Vi was tasteful and very nice. When we started in August English was a very important language in the class room and everywhere else. In daily life that is replaced by Norwegian; quite a progress during these months.
