From the schoolyear 2010/2011 the subject Norwegian language and culture will no longer be offered at our school.
Welcome to Haugetun
At our school you will get friends for life and memories for a lifetime. Our school days are varied. We offer many organized activities in the evening as well as local excursions and trips abroad.
Folk High School – something for you?
Before you apply and before you accept to spend a year at Haugetun folkehøyskole it will be very useful for you to know what kind of institution we are and what we are not. A folk high school is a special kind of Norwegian school. You cannot compare it neither with ordinary secondary schools nor with colleges or high schools where you can study to become for example an engineer or a teacher.
When you go to our school plan you will see that all students belong to a class. The foreigners join the Norwegian class and work with Norwegian language and culture. Other students you will have for example singing or football as their main activities. In addition to these classes all students have some common and compulsory subjects and activities like selective subjects, song, social sciences, Saturday lectures, concerts and different kinds of activities and trips. This means that you will spend a lot of time both with the persons in your own class and with the rest of the students.
A main idea behind this kind of schools is that all students shall live at the school. What takes place in the classrooms is important but a great part of the year is also what happens after class time: table tennis, billiard, training, playing games, watching TV or film, cooking and others initiatives. During the year you will learn a lot about your main subject which in your case will be Norwegian. Beside that you may have made a lot of good food, have experienced climbing and piano and have improved your physical shape by going to the gym. All the time you stay close to many other young people so getting friends and practise your Norwegian is fully possible.
People who have attended Haugetun often look back at a year who gave them skills for example in Norwegian and that helped them to grow and develop as human beings. You learn a lot about yourself and about people around you. The youngsters who come here leave their homes and families and get to a new place and environment. They may also get new experiences and challenges. We can mention that the students in Norwegian class as the rest of the group will be responsible for lectures and entertaining during the year. All students take part in cleaning and tidying their own rooms and common areas and clearing and washing up in connection with meals.
Like other folk high schools Haugetun offers no formal examinations and issues no diplomas or degrees. The folk high schools are independent from the regular school system In Norway. A year at Haugetun does not automatically qualify for further stay and studying in Norway. While you stay at Haugetun you will have limited possibilities for work beside school. We cannot recommend that our students have a part-time job and to receive a place at Haugetun you have to a full-time student. Be aware of that we have classes on Saturday and that we sometimes have compulsory activities in the evening even in the weekends.
The Norwegian Class
In the text above we have used the word student about people who attend the school but in Norwegian we prefer the word “elev” which means pupil since Haugetun is not a college or a university and have no formal examinations as mentioned before. This does not mean that we do not study in the Norwegian class. We really work hard with Norwegian language, culture and social science. People who make some effort can leave the school with a relatively good Norwegian competence. While the other classes have their subjects and topics we work with Norwegian and after school time there will be some homework to do. That is an important part of it.
English is an important language when we start at Haugetun. Much general information and Norwegian lectures will be translated into English which for some weeks will be the important link between you and Norwegian. Therefore it is important you have a relatively good competence in English. During the year the class will have some trips en excursions to institutions and attractions and we take part in activities that includes the whole school. We also watch some Norwegian films, have a regular use of the newspaper “Klar Tale” and try activities like skating and skiing if it is possible. As a pupil at Haugetun you will of course also get a good opportunity to taste what we usually eat in Norway either it is traditional food or newer courses like for example pasta, pizza and taco.
